John Farquharson Millburn Distillery Manager

This newspaper report comes from the Aberdeen Press & Journal, 10th February 1937 and the unfortunate news of John Farquharson, former distillery manager of Millburn, had passed recently.

Its existence gives us an insight into the man and his career. Starting at Banff, before moving to Balblair as distillery manager. Then, moving down the road to Inverness and Millburn until 1919, when he took charge of his final distillery at Royal Brackla. An interesting nugget is his involvement in one of the initial lemonade works at Inverness (a potential new avenue of research), which must have been during his residence at Millburn.

What isn't clear is how long he was in position at the distillery, as our timeline shows a William Grigor in the managerial position as early as 1905. So, potentially, John wasn't long in the post or left to pursue new business interests? This could be a possibility from the article listing a bonding company and licensed premises in Inverness. He seems relatively successful in business, before returning to Speyside (heralding from Dallas, Forres) and returning to distilling.

More research possibilities no doubt on await.

As always, my thanks to the Forgotten Whisky History FB group for their assistance.
